Women are Instrumental

A few years back, a listener of the show called up and made a request. He said he wanted to hear an instrumental song by a band made up exclusively (or at least primarily) of women.

We were stumped.

After much thought, we finally played "Take the Pain and Use It" by Bratmobile, which is 95% instrumental. (No verses, but it does repeat the title from time to time as a chorus. I didn't think of this song as a true instrumental at the time, but in hindsight, it's actually no less of an instrumental than, say, "Tequila" by the Champs, which is frequently counted among the ranks of the great instrumentals in rock and roll.)

Ever since then, this question has bugged me. What ARE the great instrumental songs by female musicians? Why are there so few of them? I hit the stacks to do some research and get to the bottom of this.

(Disclaimer part one: since our show focuses primarily on rock music, that's where I'm focusing my brunt of my research. I'm sure there are marvelous all-girl jazz quartets that exclusively perform instrumental numbers, but as instrumentals are more of a standard in jazz, I would argue that it lacks the same impact as instrumentals by all-girl bands in rock and roll. Disclaimer part two: I have an MA in Women's Studies, and spent the brunt of my time in grad school researching and writing about women in music. So allow me to nerd out for a few paragraphs.)

Historically, in the world of rock and roll, the men have far outnumbered the women. (Duh, that's why our show exists.) Of those women, there have been far more female vocalists than female instrumental musicians. Traditional constructions of gender in the western world connect masculinity with strength, rational critical thinking, technology, and the public/professional world. Femininity, however, has been traditionally associated with emotionality, physical frailness, an inextricable closeness to nature/innocence, and the private sphere of the home. While it was not uncommon for a woman of the 19th century to play an instrument such as piano in her home, in church, or as a means of instructing children, professional orchestras were made up exclusively of men, and the serious study of music restricted to same. When women eventually protested and gradually began to pursue the study and performance of music outside the home, the instruments available to them were few: the flute and acoustic guitar were acceptable because they were light, corresponded with the higher ranges of the female voice, and did not distort or strain the body or face. Percussion, low brass, and cello, on the other hand, were all seen as too heavy, requiring too much physical exertion, or ungainly for a woman to play. Furthermore, critics of the time doubted that any woman possessed the emotional self-control, physical endurance, or presence of mind necessary for the professional study and performance of music. This attitude perservered well into the 20th century, and while female instrumental musicians existed, they were few and far between (and frequently marginalized as gimmicks and/or ghettoized on a select few instruments). Heck, this attitude stubbornly perserveres to this very day, albeit to a less obvious extent... just look at the gender division along instrument lines in any high school band and you'll see what I mean.

So while women were long discouraged from becoming serious instrumental musicians, the flip side of the coin is that female singers have always been widely accepted and celebrated. A female vocalist in the classical sense (we're not talking about growly riot grrls here) supports stereotypes of femininity: the voice is a natural instrument (i.e. not manufactured by technology, nor requiring serious study for basic aptitude), singing is an obvious vehicle for emotional expression, and since there is no heavy lifting or unladylike distortion of the body, it puts the body on display as an object to be admired. When rock and roll came along, with the raw power of electrified instruments, the primal, sexualized beat, the sheer volume and energy... well, it was not a thing nice girls were supposed to DANCE to, much less learn how to play. The old gender biases of instrumentation perservered with electric guitar, bass, and drums, which were all overtly coded as masculine (if not straight up phallic) instruments. When women did make their presence known in rock and roll, it was overwhelmingly as vocalists, and has remained so to this day. (I'll allow that there are a lot of bands out there with female members, especially in the punk and indie world... but sit down and listen to any mainstream radio station. How many bands are made up of exclusively men? How many women are getting airplay? How many of those women are playing an instrument? What kind of music are these women playing, and what kind of music are the men playing?)

My point is this: traditionally, women have not been granted the same access to instrumental study as men. Mainstream rock and roll, despite slooooowly evolving gender equality, is still largely a boys' club, and gender biases still exist in regards to women as instrumental musicians. If one were to look at any of the gear magazines (Guitar World, Modern Drummer, etc.), nearly all the highly accomplished and lauded technical wizards featured are men. Or poll your friends, chances are the gearhead geek-types, the ones that spend hours in their bedrooms learning crazy hard metal solos, are going to be dudes. When women form bands, more often than not, it seems the point is that they formed a band in the first place, and/or they have something to say. (A friend of mine offered another perspective: he always thought that female voices were so pretty, they didn't need technical prowess on an instrument to underscore what they were saying. Men, on the other hand, had shitty voices and needed to express themselves through an instrument. Interesting point, but no excuse for not learning your scales, young lady.)

Despite all that, however, more and more women are forming bands, more and more girls are starting to play at a younger age, and more and more women are becoming technical wizards on their instruments. And yes, some of them even play instrumental songs. So I've started to compile a list of instrumentals by all-girl bands, which you can read below. This list is by no means exhaustive, so if you can think of any others, by all means, please leave a comment!

The Breeders - "Flipside"

WOW Gift Guide: Charities We Like

Last minute Christmas shopping got you down and out? Give the gift of charity - a few clicks of your mouse and you can make a donation in someone's name to a charity this holiday season. WOW recommends the following charities:

Rock For Kids - Originally started over twenty years ago as a way for Chicago music business employees to give Christmas gifts to homeless children, Rock For Kids has expanded and evolved in many wonderful ways. Their flagship Youth Jam Program provides music lessons for homeless and at-risk children in the Chicagoland area, and they still go shopping every December for children in homeless and domestic violence shelters in Chicago. I've been a volunteer, and Elizabeth has been a recipient of their assistance when she spent a year working for a shelter, so we can personally vouch for them!

Girls Rock! Chicago - Girls Rock! Chicago is dedicated to fostering girls’ creative expression, positive self-esteem and community awareness through rock music. Through their music education programs for girls ages 9-16, they teach girls about the musical, technical, and creative aspects involved in musicianship, because they believe that young girls are rarely encouraged to explore self-expressive creative outlets and are less likely to be given access to musical and technical instruction or equipment. Their week-long summer camp program is organized around motivating girls ages 9-16 through instrument instruction, music composition coaching, recording workshops, song-writing workshops, hands-on activities, technical equipment workshops, guest speakers, team-building activities and band performances. WOW has had the ladies of Girls Rock! Chicago on the air several times, and Emily and I have both witnessed the cuteness firsthand as workshop speakers during the summer camp - these girls really rock!

Kiva - Give a loan that changes a life. Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world. After logging on, you can choose the person whom you would like to give a loan to, plus you can also give gift certificates to family and friends so they can choose their own project!

Planned Parenthood - Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is the nation’s leading women’s health care provider, educator, and advocate, serving women, men, teens, and families. For more than 90 years, they’ve done more than any other organization in the United States to improve women’s health and safety, prevent unintended pregnancies, and advance the right and ability of individuals and families to make informed and responsible choices. In this tough economic climate, more and more people are going to turn to Planned Parenthood for their healthcare needs, so help them out by making a donation.

Greater Chicago Food Depository - It's a sad fact that the financial crisis is making more and more people need to ask for food assistance, and many Chicagoland food pantries are actually running out of food by mid-day every day. The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago’s food bank, is a nonprofit food distribution and training center providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community. The Food Depository distributes donated and purchased food through a network of 600 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters to 500,000 adults and children every year. If you'd prefer, you can also donate canned goods to the Food Depository at your local Dominicks.

Chicago Independent Radio Project - The Chicago Independent Radio Project is working to secure a broadcast license for a new community radio station in Chicago that is committed to local, independent programming, and generally furthering the causes of localism, diversity, and independence in broadcasting. They are working to convince Congress and the FCC to remove existing barriers to the granting of low power FM radio licenses in urban areas, including Chicago. We're big supporters of independent media here at WOW!

WOW Gift Guide: Books For The Feminist In Your Life

If you're looking to spread a little literary cheer to a feminist in your life this holiday season, WOW recommends the following books! (Be sure to check back to the blog this week, we're doing a series of feminist gift ideas and suggested charities all week!)

How about some classics -
Betty Friedan was sick and tired and bored - and she wrote it all down, and shared it with other housewives, and a movement spread.

Simone said it, hundreds translated it, and here we are, reading it today.

No feminist's book shelf is complete without Gloria's recollections.

Now some third wavers -

These two can be controversial at times, but they capture the turmoil of a generation.

Rebecca writes about feminism and biracial and religious identity in an honest, forthright way.

Seriously, listen up!

Collections from favorite feminist magazines -

Best collection of magazine articles ever from Bust!

Ten years of bitching...

Oh Sassy, you were something, may you rest in peace.

Stay tuned for more feminist gift ideas coming this week!

Video Fridays: Kirsty MacColl and The Pogues' Fairtytale of New York

One of WOW's favorite Christmas songs is "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl, so I wanted to put this up as our Friday video feature, since 'tis the season! In researching the links, I discovered that next week actually marks the eighth anniversary of the death of the English singer-songwriter. She was killed in Cozumel Mexico, vacationing with her family. While scuba diving, a speed boat entered the restricted area, and Kirsty pushed one of her two sons out of the way, saving his life but resulting in her death. The driver of the boat paid a fine the equivalent of ninety U.S. dollars and was released. Since then, her family and friends have pressured the Mexican government to investigate the matter further through their Justice For Kirsty campaign. Part of the campaign is encouraging people to push "Fairytale in New York" to the top of the U.K. Christmas song charts every year, so we'd like to do our part to help. If you liked the song below, consider purchasing a dollar download via the button below.

Worst Place To Be A Woman: Congo

We're heard the stories of the atrocities of civil war, militias run rampant, rape, and murder in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for quite some time, but now Amnesty International has made it official - the Congo is the worst place in the world to be a woman. Women and girls in the Congo are nearly all survivors of calculated and systematic sexual assault, which has been used as a weapon in the ongoing civil war since 1996. In addition to the emotional and mental anguish experienced by the survivors as well as members of their local community (assaults are often carried out in public, aimed to undermine the strength families or local towns), physical injuries have been devastating in an area of the world where medical care is sorely lacking, and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, are quickly rising. One result is that survivors are expelled from their families and communities, cut off not only from a support network but also from economic opportunity. To make things even worse, few aid organizations are able to work in the Congo, due to the civil strife that is ongoing.

Amnesty International hopes that by naming the Congo the worst place in the world to be a woman, they can urge other women to join in the call for an end to violence. They've prepared a petition on their website calling on President-elect Barack Obama to protect women of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. You can sign that here, and we hope you do.

Day Without A Gay

Today marks the first work boycott launched by the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in the United States. The mission of Day Without a Gay is to get LGBT employees to call in "gay" to work and spend the day volunteering at an organization working to further queer civil rights.
Not only will this put more hands on deck at organizations that need all the free labor they can get, it will draw attention to gay employees' worth as, you know, people and workers. Hopefully employers and co-workers will note their absence and connect the dots: "Hey, things aren't as fun/productive/smooth without Bob or Sue at work today. Wow, they are standing up for civil rights that they have been denied but I've been granted for arbitrary reasons. Gays: they really are just like the rest of us. Huh."

In an ideal situation, Day Without a Gay will create a noticable impact on straight allies and potentially change the minds of those who support hate-filled amendments such as those recently passed in California, Colorado, Florida and Arkansas. It will, at the very least, show that the community is done sitting down and accepting "tolerance" in the place of full civil rights. In other words: not being beat up (as much) and being given domestic partnerships or civil unions in a handful of states isn't enough, and we're taking action.

Accolades for The Accolades

Check it out, Saudi Arabia's first all-girl rock band!

Fighting still-oppressive public morality standards, The Accolades are a group of college-age girls who, encouraged by the growing trend of rock and roll in the country's more urban settings, have decided to start their own band.

In a country where women are not allowed to drive and rarely appear in public without their faces covered, the band is very different. The prospect of female rockers clutching guitars and belting out angry lyrics about a failed relationship... would once have been unimaginable here.

“In Saudi, yes, it’s a challenge,” said the group’s lead singer, Lamia, who has piercings on her left eyebrow and beneath her bottom lip.... “Maybe we’re crazy. But we wanted to do something different.”

RIP Odetta

Legendary African-American civil rights folk singer Odetta died yesterday at the age of 77, just weeks before she was to perform at the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Odetta started her singing career in the opera and musical theatre as a teenager in Los Angeles (cleaning houses with her mother to pay for classes), but made the move towards folksinging in 1950 after encountering the new American folk revival in San Francisco. She toured extensively across the country, bringing a sound of jazz and blues mixed with American folk revival and spiritualism to audiences from New York to Los Angeles and influencing artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Using her musical skills to give voice to the civil rights struggle, Odetta toured the country, marched on Washington, and met with Presidents of many administrations, including Bill Clinton who introduced her as the 1999 winner of the National Endowment for the Arts National Medal of Arts. When her health failed in recent years and her doctor forbid her from performing, she switched doctors and defiantly went on stage in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank. We wish that Odetta could have lived to sing at the inauguration!

Video Fridays: The Moldy Peaches

I don't think I've seen choreography this awesome since the "Stand" video.

(Seeing as there's been a renewed interest in the Moldy Peaches ever since Juno came out, I thought I'd share this little gem. Sure, "Anyone Else But You" is a beautiful song, but have you ever seen the band behind the song? Was it what you expected?)

The Time Is Now

Today cities around the country hosted protests against California's Proposition 8, a ballot initiative to ban gay marriage in California (where it had been legalized just months ago)that passed on November 4. Also passed on Election Day were similar propositions in Arizona and Florida as well as a law in Arkansas that outlaws adoption by unmarried persons (cough...gays...cough).

Arguments for gay marriage have been articulated in newspapers, blogs, and t.v.: every citizen should have equal rights, denying some citizens equal marriage rights is unfair because they pay full taxes, it is matter of basic civil rights - the list goes on and on.

This movement isn't just about marriage rights, though. Not everyone wants to get married. Not everyone will get married, even if they have the legal right to. It is about no longer placing those in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in the "other" category. And when people are placed in that category, it is so much easier for people to see them as diffrent - as less than. Which leads to violence. It is easy to hurt someone who you don't see as human as yourself. Or to hurt yourself when you're tired of being treated like a second class citizen.

We can't allow another Matthew Shepard to happen. Another Brandon Teena. We can't continue standing by while the gay teen suicide rate rises. The time for civil rights for EVERYONE is now.

So what can you do about it? Don't be complacent. Even if you aren't queer, even if you don't want to get married, this is something you should be concerned about. Tell your friends and family why this issue matters. Write letters to legislators. Donate funds to legal advocacy groups that are doing some of the heavy lifting around this issue, like Lambda Legal andNational Center for Lesbian Rights. Tell friends who are getting married that instead of a gift, you're going to donate to marriage equality in their name.

Boycott businesses that either donated funds directly to Yes on 8 or are in bed with groups who donated to Yes on 8:
McDonalds Corporation
Home Depot
Bonneville Radio Stations (In Chicago, they have 101.9, 100.3, 97.1, and 96.9 F.M.)
Lowes
And I'm getting really local here: Century 21 theater in Evanston.

This is a call to action - the kind we can't do on air. I'm talking to you, person who sits on their couch and thinks "Wow, this is all really messed up" and does NOTHING. Get up. Do something. We don't have time to waste.

Video Friday: Janis Ian's Married In London

The lack of civil rights of GLBT folks is no laughing matter, but Janis Ian brings humor to a horrible situation with her song "Married In London". Check out the video below. If you want to join the movement for marriage equality, join Chicago Against Proposition 8 this Saturday November 15 at 12:30 at the Federal Plaza (Dearborn and Adams). Raise your voice, raise your fist.

What Veterans' Day Means For Female Veterans

US Cadet Nurses Corps

Veterans' Day is often overlooked by our generation, or taken over by flag-waving conservatives, so I think it's important to remind ourselves of the great sacrifice that veterans have made, and continue to make, on behalf of our country. While I personally work towards a day where our nation will be focused on preemptive peacemaking rather than war, even a war protester like myself acknowledges that we will always need a military for our defense, and I am humbled by the sacrifice of those who choose that path.

Today, let's remember especially the female veterans of war, a population often overlooked. We've heard before about how female soldiers experience sexual assault at disproportionately high rates, but new disturbing reports now indicate female veterans are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to homeless housing services as well. Female nurses from World War II, the Cadet Nurse Corps, are still unrecognized as official veterans by our government, largely because of their sex.

Today, take a few minutes to send a few emails to your representatives. First, write in support of the Cadent Nurse Corps Equity Act. Next, visit the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America website, where you can ask President Bush to sign the GI Bill, which would provide additional services and assistance for our generation of veterans. Finally, if you have a veteran in your life, give them a call today!

Patriotism

Today I am proud of my country.

Last night was one of the most remarkable nights in the history of the United States. It was the result of the work of so many before us: Martin Luther King. Angela Davis. Frederick Douglass. Rosa Parks. Malcolm X.
It should not have taken us this long to get here, but we finally did and not a moment too soon.

Last night the voices of so many Americans were finally heard. The voices of the poor and the middle class, the voices of the young and old, straight and queer, of people of every race and national origin. Voices saying that we are tired. We are ready for change. We are ready to be heard.

Today I am proud of my country.

God bless President Barack Hussein Obama and God bless America.

Vote, Women!

Today is Election Day in the United States of America.

The Women On Women Music Program would like to remind you that it is especially important that all women get out the vote. If you'll permit me a little family history - I say this as the granddaughter of someone who could not legally vote when she was born, simply because of her sex. My grandmother Helena, born in 1913, was seven years old when women finally got the right to vote. Her mother, my great-grandmother, cast her first vote in 1920. Even then, the struggle wasn't over - likely a Democrat (as most Irish Catholic Iowa farmers were), my great-grandmother had to wait twelve more years, until 1932, to see one of her chosen candidates actually win! Coincidentally, 1932 was the year my eighteen year old grandmother would have cast her first ballot, for Franklin D Roosevelt. No doubt mother and daughter were thrilled to see some hope and change in the form of this exciting new candidate who promised a "New Deal" with Americans suffering under the economic crisis of Great Depression and threats of global war.

Sound familiar? Here's hoping that when my mother, sister and I walk through the gates of Grant Park this evening, we'll have just as much reason to celebrate as those two Iowa women did seventy-six years ago.

Some things to remember:
  • Polls open at 6:00am and close at 7:00pm. If you are in line at 6:59pm, you are legally permitted to cast your ballot, no matter how long you may have to wait in line after the polls close.
  • To find your polling place in the city of Chicago, visit ChicagoElections.com.
  • You will need to verify your name and address and sign your signature to receive a ballot. You do not need to show ID, but it is a good idea to bring some, just in case there are any problems.
  • You are not permitted to "electioneer" within 100 feet of the polling place. Some people have interpreted this to mean that you are not allowed to wear pins, shirts or hats in support of a candidate. This is under dispute, but to avoid problems just take off your hat or pin, or wear a sweater over your shirt, while you are in line and voting.
  • If you have any problems at the polls, call 311, 911 (emergencies only) or the Chicago Election Day hotline at (312) 269-7870.
After you vote, don't forget to tune into tonight at 8pm to WLUW on 88.7fm in Chicago and wluw.org online. Emily will be playing a special election celebration set in honor of the occasion!

RIP, Yma Sumac

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of one of our perennial favorites, Latin/Lounge/Exotica singer Yma Sumac.

Renowned for her astonishing vocal range (five octaves at the peak of her career!), Yma started out as Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo, an untrained and unknown singer from Peru. Before moving to the States in the mid 1940s with her bandleader husband, she adopted the stage name Yma Sumac (originally Imma Sumac) and with it, an exotic, mysterious, and glamourous persona. Sometimes claiming to be an Incan princess, and the direct descendant of Peru's last Incan emperor, Yma took Hollywood by storm. Throughout the 50s, she worked with Les Baxter and Billy May, producing the best known works of her career, including Mambo! and Voice of the Xtabay, among others.

Her songs can be heard on the soundtracks to films such as Death to Smoochy and The Big Lebowski, and her "Bo Mambo" was sampled by the Black Eyed Peas on "Hands Up" from 2003's Elephunk.

Here is a video tribute to Yma Sumac, set to the song "Malambo No. 1."

You, too, can be a Riot Girl (tm) for Halloween!

From the website of an online costume store who shall remain nameless:

"Item Description
Our Child's Riot Girl outfit is the ideal Punk Rocker Costume for girls. For a fun group costume idea consider any of our Punk Rock Costumes for any age.
Main Features
Plaid dress
Vinyl studded belt
Vinyl spike details on dress
Please Note
Tights and hair bows not included."

Like sender-inner (and friend of the show) Danielle, this costume baffles me. I am simultaneously amused, annoyed, and appalled. On one hand, I could see how it might be kinda cool, because it's not all sweetness and light and layers of pink fluffy tutus. On the other hand... come on, it's a mass-marketed RIOT GRRRL costume! That ain't right. Seriously, I don't know whether I should be forwarding this to all my friends so we can have a good laugh, or whether I should be tying myself a noose with my fishnets. Basically, I just keep staring at it and going "Uhhh..."

So! Let's take a poll.

Is this costume troublesome because:
a) It supports the commodification of "girl power," without actually doing much of anything to fight patriarchal structures, empower young women, or support female musicians;
b) It demeans the message of the actual riot grrrl movement;
c) It places "female musician" among the ranks of "superhero," "fairy princess," or "kitty cat," i.e. fun for playing dress-up, but not a realistic life goal;
d) It's going to make Kathleen Hanna kill herself just so she can spin in her grave;
e) It doesn't come with a guitar, dammit!
f) It doesn't even look like what Riot Grrrls wear/wore, it looks more like a pseudo-goth/faux-metal/Gwar-esque get-up (especially with those oversized fake spikes);
g) It makes you feel really, really old;
h) The hairbows, which are the best part of the whole dang costume, aren't included;
i) It's still pink.

Multiple choice answers will be allowed.

Amy Ray Concert Ticket Contest!

And now, here's the contest you've been waiting for - We've got a pair of tickets to the Amy Ray concert at Metro on Wednesday October 29.

Amy Ray is best known as one half of the Indigo Girls, but she’s also an accomplished solo artist with three albums, as well as the owner of Daemon Records. While Indigo Girls practically defined the folk-rock genre of a generation, Amy Ray’s solo albums allow her to experiment with a louder more hard rock sound that’s closer to riot grrrl than acoustic guitars, and tours with backing bands like the Butchies further allowed her to play to the rock side of her musical personality. Her first solo album, 2001’s Stag, featured rock that surprised critics and excited fans. Prom, released in 2005, continued her hard-hitting political satire in song. Her third solo album, Didn’t It Feel Kinder, was released this summer and features members of Arizona on several tracks.

If you'd like to win, leave a comment with your email address. We will contact you by Tuesday night if you are a winner.

And now, here's a clip from an upcoming Spring 2009 documentary on Amy's solo work.

It Isn't a Lady Jam....

.....but it is a jam that a lady likes. The new Ben Folds album, Way to Normal, is really, really good. It is clever. It is poppy. It has a song that references the astronaut/diaper incident.

I have only one complaint - there's a song called the "Bitch Went Nuts". Really? You had to go there, Ben Folds? There is just something about a man saying that word with that kind of intent that makes my skin crawl. He spent a month recording with Amanda Palmer....you would think he would know better.

Choice cuts:
"The Frown Song"
"Cologne"
"You Don't Know Me (Feat. Regina Spektor)"

Here is the the video for "You Don't Know Me". Enjoy!

You Don't Know Me

To Senator John McCain,

Sarah Palin is not my role model.

I saw this on many a G-chat and Facebook status on Thursday. And I can't help but echo the sentiment.

Do you know who my role models are, John McCain? My mom. My dad. My uncle, who is a kick-butt attorney and uses his powers for good. The women I write this blog with.
Your opponent.

Women are not monolithic. But I don't even think that was what you were getting at. I think that what you were trying to say, Senator, was that Sarah Palin is a role model for women because she has taken strides, because she could be in position of power this time next year that a woman has never had. And I will concede that she has had to deal with some sexist nonsense. Sure. But Obama has dealt with racism all through this process, too. And I don't think the paternalistic language that you use when talking about her helps. Just between us, I think you chose her because you don't see her as an equal or superior...but that is for another blog.

I don't think that someone who wants to deny women their right to choose is a role model for women. Or men. Or anyone. Or someone who thinks killing animals is a sport. Or who lets their supporters yell racial slurs at their crew. Or embraces the ridiculous, inflammatory language of calling Obama a terrorist. Someone who wants to keep letting the rich get richer while the poor and middle class struggle along.

If you were to present that list to someone and ask them if they were qualities of a role model for women and girls, I'm going to take a guess that many women would say no. These are not feminist qualities. They aren't principles of equality.

I think where you've gone wrong, Senator, is assuming that just because someone was born female that they represent us. If you wanted to talk about role models for women, you should have looked to your right. Maybe spend some time with Michelle Obama. Or Justice Ginsberg. Or even Dr. Rice. But don't try to pass off your choice as the new patron of strong women. Just don't. We're smarter than that.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth, age 27

Yo La Tengo - "Sugarcube"

I love, love, love this video. I'm posting it today for the following reasons:

1) The album it's from, "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One," is a fall record to me (possibly due to the inclusion of the song "Autumn Sweater"), and there's been a hint of a chill in the Chicago air lately;
2) It's almost Halloween, and this video has costumes;
3) It features Bob and David from Mr. Show. Hooray!

(I could dissect this video and use it to discuss the "industry," what's wrong with major corporate labels, the production of an image and the manufactured culture of rebellion, the concept of authenticity, etc. etc. etc. Really, though, I just like the video.)

Blog Action Day 2008: Fight Global Poverty

In my internet travels today, I came across several blogs discussion global poverty and discovered that today is Blog Action Day 2008, a day when bloggers across the globe have agreed to discuss global poverty issues. It's only fitting that we at the Women On Women Music Program take part in this discussion, since throughout history and culture, women are consistently more affected by poverty issues than men. Sexism, violence against women, workplace discrimination, access to healthcare and access to child care are some of the largest issues contributing to the economic disparity between poor women and men, and not just in third world nations, but here in our own backyard. Want to help fight global poverty? Here are some suggestions -

Make the United States government accountable to you - pledge to vote today at the National Women's Law Center's Vote 2008 campaign.

Ask your Senator to support the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, which would allow women to sue their employeers for wage discrimination.

Start your own business, and once it grows, hire other women. Sound hard? Check out the Small Buisness Administration website for more information.

Owning your own business is the most effective way for women in third world nations to gain economic independence as well as political power in their local community. To help them be successful, consider using your purchasing power to support women-owned small buisnesses when you do your holiday shopping this year. Ten Thousand Villages and UNICEF's online store support the work of women around the globe.

Invest in women's businesses through Kiva. Kiva, one of the most successful micro-lending organizations, exemplifies the economic theory of giving women the means to create their own businesses, pay back lenders, and then invest in their communities. This theory, championed by Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, won them the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.

Sign up for action email lists from the ONE Campaign, which has been working on global poverty issues for nearly a decade.

Test your vocabulary skills with FreeRice.com, which donates food through the UN World Food Program for every correct answer.

Have more suggestions? Put them in the comments!

National Boob Month

You may have noticed by the plethora of pink during October that this is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While there has been some criticism in recent years of the focus on breast cancer as opposed to other more fatal types of cancer, as well as the commodification and over-pinkification of the disease, it never hurts to be reminded of the importance of knowing your own body. The American Cancer Society has an extensive document on Breast Cancer Early Detection, and the Susan G Koman Foundation has a guide to performing a breast self-exam - do yourself a favor and check them out. If you find a lump, monitor it for one month, and then call a doctor to have it checked out. Almost all lumps go away, or are non-cancerous, but you should pay attention to your particular body's quirks.

Oh Jessica Rabbit... how we love you.

Video Fridays: F*ck and Run

One of my favorite Liz Phair songs that we never get to play on the show.

(A note on profanity: Regardless of FCC "safe harbor" regulations, WLUW has a strict rule against profanity at any time of the day or night. I don't disagree with this policy, and whenever I want to play a song with a potty-word, I just bleep it out. Ms. Phair, however... well, she's rather liberal in her dropping of the f-bomb, to put it mildly, and I'd be bleeping out nearly half the damn song. I think I need to make a radio edit of the song so she's singing about ducks, or hockey, or tucking in her shirt or something.)

Boi, Do I H8 Rayon

In case you ever wondered what the Women on Women show looks like behind the scenes...

Also, who says there aren't enough girls starting bands? It's like a Shaggs pajama party!

MYSTERY SOLVED

According to the Pipettes' Wikipedia page:

Their name, which is a reference to a laboratory instrument, is a nod to the experimental origins of the group. It should be noted that the groups' name is pronounced the same way as the instrument in British English: /pɪ ˈpɛt/ -- not /pai ˈpɛt/, as in American English.

See, that's why I was saying it PIE-pets, because I was remembering my bumbling years in high school chemistry. Jen was saying it PIP-ets, because that's what she'd heard other slick industry insiders saying. As it turns out, we were both right. As usual. Hooray!

Man, now I'm going to have "Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me" stuck in my head the whole rest of the day. Not a bad thing in and of itself, but unfortunately, I think my job frowns on random outbursts of doing the pony in one's cubicle.

Protect Women's Health Parity

You might not be a doctor, but you have a chance to be a guinea pig... of sorts... in Northwestern University's Women's Health Registry program.

Did You Know?
  • Heart disease is the #1 killer of American women.
  • Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer of women in the United States. Colorectal cancer and breast cancer are the second and third leading cancer killers of women.
  • Women are more likely than men to die from a stroke.
  • Nearly twice as many women as men die from Alzheimer's disease each year.
  • Seventy-five percent of Americans living with autoimmune disorders (such as lupus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis) are women.
  • Women are far more likely than men to suffer from chronic pain and chronic fatigue.

Why
do some diseases affect women more than men? Why do women respond to some drugs and treatment therapies differently than men? What environmental factors and behaviors most influence women's health?

Those questions have plagued doctors and researchers for years, and Northwestern is undertaking a wide ranging study of women's health to help answer these, and other questions about women's health. To participate, you just need to fill out a survey online and update it once a year. If you qualify for a research study, Northwestern will contact you and ask if you'd like to participate. There's no cost, no obligation, and your information is kept secure. Help yourself, help your daughters, help your granddaughters - join the registry today!
